Into the Badlands is one of the best television shows I have never heard of until I saw it on Netflix. I just happened to click on it one day and I was surprised because I thought this show was going to be in Chinese. The show stars Chinese American actor Daniel Wu who starred in many Hong Kong films and was managed by Jackie Chan himself. The last time I watched one of his films was in Jackie Chan’s Shinjuku Incident. That was decades ago!
IOB is based on the Chinese folklore of Journey to the West, at least according to the various resources I have read such as Variety and The Bustle.
For those who doesn’t know the story of Monkey King, it is a story of redemption, salvation and adventure. The last Monkey King film I watched was called a The Chinese Odyssey Part 1: Pandora’s Box and 2: Cinderella starring Stephen Chow.
When I read what the show was based on, it clicked in my head as to why in season of IOB one of the main protagonist had to die. Now I see where the mythology is going and how the series came about. For those who hasn’t seen it yet, I’ll leave it up to you to figure out who died.
Until then, have an awesome week.
I am psyched up on Into the Badlands season three on AMC.
