Priyanka Chopra – In My City

I love Bollywood films. I have watched Bollywood films since I was a little girl. The first film I watched was with Sridevi with Rishi Kapoor in Chandni (1989). However, like all Hmong little girls we had thought that we had popular Hmong actors and actresses because the movies we watched were dubbed in Hmong. I was disappointed, because I never knew about any other Asians until I discovered that Jackie Chan wasn’t Hmong either. All these films I watched were dubbed into Hmong films, taking away the official credit from the original artists. Way to crush a little girls hope of meeting Hong Kong superstar (Jackie Chan) who is not Hmong.

Moving on…

During the premiere of the NFL pregame show opening of the Green Bay Packers on a Thursday night, I had witnessed a well known Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra debut her first American single In My City. I was excited and so happy that I contacted my friends in New York City to do a feature on Priyanka Chopra for Asiance Magazine (still in process). I couldn’t believe my luck, besides Jay Sean, another Bollywood artists is trying to knock down the walls of American music.

For those who never heard of Priyanka Chopra, she’s one incredible woman with great accomplishments worldwide. Chopra’s education started at La Martinière Girls College in Lucknow as a resident student, completing her tenth grade in Boston, Massachusetts returning back to India enrolling in Jai Hind College and Basant Singh Institute of Science in Churchgate, Bombay. However, it seems like super stardom was knocking at her front door after winning Miss India and Miss World in the same year consecutively.

How did I know her when I have never seen a single film she did? Well, I was a huge Bollywood fan during my high school year and subscribed to Stardust Magazine based in the United States. There was a photo of this gorgeous woman, I briefly read about her and that she was Miss World. However, like all American citizens, there was no way for me to watch any Bollywood films unless they came out on DVD or VHS (when they still existed). So, I had no idea about her acting skills until I watched them online years later on Netflix. Thank you Netflix.

While watching some of her films, I had to admit that some of her films were unconvincing, it wasn’t her acting skills, but the movie roles she was portraying and the storyline. I was sadden by the fact that no one in the Bollywood was writing any good film roles for a diversified female actress such as Chopra. She played the most versatile roles in all the films she was in, I enjoyed  the idea that she could play an action hero and then turn around to play an autistic woman in her latest release with Ranbir Kapoor in Barfi. I hate to break it to the Bollywood entertainment, but they are their own worst critics. Only one nomination for Anjaana Anjaani? Really? That’s a whole new ball game there… So stay tuned on my initial review on Anjaana Anjaani. I have a lot of catching up to do on my reviews, don’t worry I’ll get to it. Eventually!

Anyhow, now that you know a little bit about the lovely Priyanka Chopra, let’s fast forward to her single debut In My City featuring Will I Am. If you want to know more about the lovely Priyanka, you can always Google her name. Her name and images will pop out from thousands of fan sites, including her Facebook, Twitter and official site.

Getting back on track, In My City is a very simple song to sing and welcoming. This song is very catchy and laid back music for everyone, including at the clubs for those who parties all night. Here are the lyrics for In My City:

I know you got your own town
I know you got your own ways
I know you got your own life
I’m just sayin’ come on down to my place

Come on make some new friends
And tell me what you drinkin’
I know there’s no place like home
But I know you gonna like it in my city

Chorus:
Everybody’s welcome here
Everybody welcome to my city
We ain’t got no worries here
I know you’re gonna like it in my city
You know you got a friend in me
You ain’t gonna wanna leave
co-co-co-co-come on, co-co-co-come on
You ain’t never had a party
Till you come to party in my city

(Will I Am)
Driving down to boulevard
Coming out inside my car
No sitin in my backyard
Let’s go for a ride
Come on and ride with me
we got some sights to see
Baby just come with me to my community
Come on let’s go oh let’s hit the road
oh turn up the radio

We do it all night long
We got everything you and me
Music plays all night long
I know you’re gonna like it in my city

Chorus:
Everybody’s welcome here
Everybody welcome to my city
We ain’t got no worries here
I know you’re gonna like it in my city
You know you got a friend in me
You ain’t gonna wanna leave
co-co-co-co-come on, co-co-co-come on
You ain’t never had a party
Till you come to party in my city

When you’re here the city is yours
let the music play, dance tonight away
eh eh everybody into my city
come on in let’s enjoy
let the music play, dance tonight away
eh eh everybody into my city
come in welcome in my city

Chorus:
Everybody’s welcome here
Everybody welcome to my city
We ain’t got no worries here
I know you’re gonna like it in my city
You know you got a friend in me
You ain’t gonna wanna leave
co-co-co-co-come on, co-co-co-come on
You ain’t never had a party
Till you come to party in my city

Review on Official Music Video:
Although I enjoy listening to the song, the music video could have been more original and imaginative. The song In My City is welcoming friends, neighbors and strangers to enjoy themselves in a city to discover what the city has to offer travelers on vacation. I guess drinking and partying is one way of enjoying your vacation.

It lacked the connection to the audiences and on a professional level, this music video was more of child’s play than authentic. The dancing was weak, the performance was okay, but it just turned off those who expected much more.

I give credit for those who helped make the music video available and possible, but I had higher expectations coming from a well known Bollywood celebrity. My friends over at Formless Films and Wong Fu Productions, which are short budget small filmmaker, makes much more effective music videos than the professionals that DesiHits are working with.

Sorry Priyanka, but I hope for a better music video in the future. I am just giving my professional constructional criticism as I do to other films, music (videos & songs) and books.
